Door Dot & Ti Burr -- The Sand Men

Door Dot and Ti Burr met one day on the beach when they both happened to find a huge bag of cookies — at the same time.  There were so many cookies that it was easy to share them.

Door Dot was a big guy — a little slow but always alert.  Ti Burr was rather sloppy and ate everything very fast.

So anyway they were walking down the beach eating cookies when they saw something incredible — three sand men were walking toward them.  They looked odd — they had arms and legs and heads and they walked slowly — but they were made out of sand.

They could not understand how anything made out of sand could walk.  So they stopped and watched these three sand men — but they kept on eating the cookiers.  As the sand men got closer, Door Dot and Ti Burr could see that they were talking to each other very excitedly — and that the sand men had not seen them.

The water was very calm — it was hardly moving except for some small waves so Door Dot and Ti Burr walked out a little way.  The three sand men passed by and never saw them — two of them seemed to be more excited than the middle guy.  The middle sand man just kept nodding his head.

Door Dot and Ti Burr had just finished eating their cookies when suddenly the three sand men stopped and began to dig in the sand — soon a great cave had been carved into the sand and the sand men disappeared into the cave.  So Door Dot and Ti Burr went up to the opening in the sand and looked in.

At first, they could not see anything but after awhile they began to see into the dim interior.  At the end of the tunnel, they could see the three sand men still digging out the cave.  Then the three sand men disappeared and the cave was filled with the light of great rainbow and they could hear very curious music coming from deep within the cave.

Then the top of the cave opened up and revealed a deep ravine with the great rainbow still in place and the strange music still playing — at the end of the ravine they saw the three sand men disappearing into a funny looking little hut.  Door Dot and Ti Burr walked along the bottom of the ravine and finally arrived at the little hut which had a small open door in it.

Door Dot could not fit through the door but Ti Burr could get in — so Ti Burr stuck his head in to see what was happening.  It was very bright inside — the rainbow sparkled and the music was loud and almost sounded like chimes.  The three sand men were gone.  In the center of the hut was a huge white pearl — and, as Ti Burr watched, it slowly shrinked and finally disappeared.  Then Ti Burr looked down and saw another big bag of cookies — Ti Burr grabbed them and closed the door as he left.  The great rainbow faded away, the music slowed and then stopped.  The little hut fell apart and then was just a pile of wood.

Door Dot and Ti Burr stared at the ravine and the wrecked hut — they agreed that this was a very strange beach.  Then they looked around and started walking along the beach again  -- and eating the cookies, which were very tasty.
