Lockmi + Polo -- Yellow Umbrellas

Lockmi and Polo lived in the dessert and both of them loved ice cream. Lockmi was really shy but Polo was different — nothing bothered Polo.

They had a good supply of ice cream because they knew where to find a magic cow named Eve-A who not only produced milk and cheese but lots of ice cream. They could never figure out how a cow could make ice cream–but they didn’t complain — because it tasted great. Eve-A carried a big basket around between her horns and somehow the ice cream was packed into it.

Since it was hot most of the time in the desert, they felt very pleased with themselves to have a steady supply of ice cream. Secretly they wondered what else Eve-A could do — but they did not dare ask.

Lockmi and Polo each carried a big yellow umbrella — and they would convert these into tents whenever they stopped. They usually walked under their umbrellas because the sun was very hot. These umbrellas were different -- because at night, the inside would become furry — this kept the inside very warm since the nights in the desert were really cold. Lockmi and Polo carried their umbrellas everywhere they went.

The thing that they liked best was to find a big sand dune and to turn the umbrellas upside down and get in them. Then they would ride their umbrellas down one side of the sand dune — the umbrellas were like little boats riding on the sand. The best part was that the umbrellas would keep going and would ride up another sand dune. Then they would start down again.

Eve-A stayed near some date palm trees which surrounded a crystal clear pool of water — the pool of water was just at the base of a high cliff. Eve-A had lots of grass to eat because it grew all around the pool of water. Every now and then, Eve-A would supply an abundance of food — especially of ice cream and many of her friends would come to enjoy the parties. Lockmi and Polo never missed these parties not just because of the food but because of the interesting folks that would show up.

One day Polo decided to climb one of the palm trees — he picked a tall palm tree and climbed way up near the top. He looked all around and also he could see down into the deep pool of water. To his surprise, there were a few big crabs deep down in the pool of water. They were bright blue and they looked tough and strong. Then he looked out into the desert at the sand dunes — and far away he saw a strange image floating around.

Polo called to Lockmi and Lockmi climbed up and took a look. Neither of them could figure out what the strange image was. It was hazy for awhile and then would change its shape and color. Sometimes it was big and then it became much smaller. They didn’t know it but Eve-A was playing games with them. The desert winds were her friends and they could do amazing things.

Finally, Polo and Lockmi came down and sat on the grass. They had some ice cream and thought about how strange this place was — they decided not to worry about it because everyday was different and they had lots of good stuff to eat.
